Description
The green ginger is an herb, like its relative the domestic ginger (Zingiber officinale). It is endemic to Queensland, found growing as an understory plant in rainforests in the Wet Tropics and on Cape York Peninsula. It grows 2 - 4m in in height and flowers and fruits at ground level sporadically throughout the year.
Cultivation
Amomum dallachyi will grow well in a shady, moist spot in a tropical garden. It can be grown from fresh seed but the easiest propagation method is by divisions of the rhizome.
Etymology
amomos = blameless; in reference to supposed antidotal properties of some species
